Vagal Nerve stimulation (VNS)
Why is Epilepsy Scotland conducting this survey?
VNS therapy is a treatment option for some people with epilepsy. It is not suitable for everyone. A consultant neurologist would be able to assess an individual to see if VNS is an appropriate option. Epilepsy Scotland is interested in finding out how many people in Scotland have been offered VNS as a treatment option.
What is VNS?
A small pulse generator is fitted beneath your skin, usually under your left collarbone, and attached to the vagal nerve in your neck. This electrode is linked to a small generator that is put into your chest. The generator initiates a very low electrical pulse. It is programmed to stimulate this nerve to hopefully reduce seizures. There is also a magnet you can use to start the electrical pulse if you feel a seizure coming on.
